Did you receive a notice in the mail that your industrial facility has the potential for slug discharge? You’re not the only one.
What’s slug discharge?
“Slug discharge” is any unscheduled discharge into a sewer system that could interfere with local wastewater treatment. Slug discharge could be an accidental spill or the disposal of prohibited substances into a sewer system. A “slug control plan” is put in place for spill prevention and cleanup protocols.
Who needs a slug discharge plan?
In Cook County, IL, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) checks each industrial facility that has a wastewater discharge permit by taking note of its use and storage of hazardous chemicals along with other spill containment protocols. If there is potential for slug discharge, the MWRD will send notification via mail that a slug control plan is needed. *
Important notes to consider:
- Slug control plans need to be reported in MWRD’s checklist format and certified by an Illinois-licensed Professional Engineer.
- Failure to submit a plan within the 90-day timeline given will result in fines.
- A slug control plan needs to be reevaluated every two years and requires certification by an Illinois-licensed Professional Engineer.
